Moths are up to 14 mm long; their wings are long and narrow. They are tan or golden in color with three dark spots on each wing or a tuft of hair on the head in the case of the clothes moth. These two species are harmful.
The females lay up to 50 eggs, setting them on an object. The period of development until the adult stage can vary between 30 and 90 days. The lifespan of the moth varies between 3 and 8 days, depending on its sex.
Moths prefer places that have not been used or opened in a long time such as boxes containing fabrics or garments. The larvae feed mainly on animal products such as wool, feathers and fur, but may also feed on flax, cotton, silk, grain, dairy products, meat, not to mention others.
The moths are insects that can cause serious damage to carpets and animal materials such as feathers, wool, fur and felt. They can also damage some plants, such as herbs, spices and tobacco.
Holes found in clothing and other tissues may indicate a moth infestation. Hair in furs that are cut at the base exposing the leather is another indicator. Cocoons can be found hidden inside crevices and cracks.
